"We have an illustrious group of people who have generously agreed to give their time and talent," said Donaldson. "And while this is a diverse gathering of individuals, we all have one common interest that we share with Moffitt Cancer Center, and that is Moffitt's mission to contribute to the prevention and cure of cancer."

Donaldson is the author of a 1987 autobiography, "Hold On, Mr. President," and a graduate of the University of Texas at El Paso, which recently named its Center for Communications after him.

Diagnosed with melanoma nine years ago, Donaldson is a frequent voice of hope for people with cancer, often pointing out that "cancer is not an automatic death sentence. There are 9 million of us living in the U.S."

While some scientists maintain that cancer can never be conquered, Moffitt researchers - working in the laboratory and transforming their discoveries immediately into new treatments - truly believe in their mission, according to Donaldson. Only people inspired by such belief could ever hope to discover a cure, he said.

Donaldson has referred to cancer as "the terrorist within" and, along with prostate cancer survivor Gen. H. Norman Schwarzkopf, U.S. Army retired, he has lobbied for the enactment of prescription drug coverage for Medicare beneficiaries. Donaldson and Schwarzkopf coauthored an opinion piece distributed by the Knight-Ridder Tribune service in which they urged Congress to act "sooner to help cancer patients lacking access to drugs even prior to the anticipated effective date of 2006 for drug coverage."

In 2001, the National Cancer Institute awarded Moffitt the status of a Comprehensive Cancer Center in recognition of its excellence in research and contributions to clinical trials, prevention and cancer control. Additionally, Moffitt is a member of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network, a prestigious alliance of the country’s leading cancer centers, and is listed in the U.S. News & World Report as one of the top cancer hospitals in America. Moffitt's sole mission is to contribute to the prevention and cure of cancer.
